Biggin Hill International Airshow - Kent, 26th June 2010
Review - In what turned out to be it's last year the 2010 Biggin Hill
International Airshow was a memorable event with some spectacular flying,
great weather and a good mix of warbirds and fast jets. Not
surprisingly the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain featured strongly
in the show with a fitting finale of Spitfires, Hurricane's and Buchon
'Me109' and Nord 'Me108', with smoke from the pyrotechnics creating an
atmospheric scene for the aircraft to fly through. Seeing the BBMF
Spitfire MKXIX and Eurofighter Typhoon in formation and then making
opposition passes was also a sight long to be remembered! Modern day
RAF participation was high with a rare airshow appearance from a Harrier GR9
and VC10. I am sure at the time no one in the audience could have
believed that less than six months later the Harrier force would be no more.
The announcement by the operators of Biggin Hill of the termination of the
Airshow contract with Air Displays International, the show's organisers for
many years, was also a shock with a much smaller event now mooted for
September 10, 2011. It is a great shame that one of the last major
shows at a historic wartime airfield has now been shelved.
